Speaking of InstantAction…
A couple posts ago, I encouraged bands and musicians to go check out Attack the Soundtrack. That’s the competition for aspiring game musicians where you can get your tune in a game. The service this competition is for is called InstantAction and it’s currently in beta. Its creators describe it as an “online console”.
You’re all familiar with the tiny flash-based games you can play online. Lots of easy (and addicting) casual games have online versions. But InstantAction is going a bit more toward the hardcore (core) gaming crowd, bringing various first-person, third-person, and top-down multiplayer games to your browser. Yep, you play these games in your browser. Nothing to install on your computer. It can take a little while longer for your browser to download than your typical online casual game but it’s all easy as pie, and once it’s downloaded it’s a breeze to play again and again.
I think IA is a good thing for the industry. It’s targeting a crowd that has been neglected: those people wanting a little more depth or action to their games but who also enjoy the social aspect of casual gaming on sites like Pogo. You can play solo on IA, but it’s full of features that make playing with friends and strangers really easy.
So, anything that helps expand the industry like that is good for us game composers. More opportunities, especially for indies, are sure to arise. I encourage you to all check it out and sign up for an account. Ask a friend or two to sign up as well so you can get some multiplayer with people you know.
Oh, and I’ve done the audio for a couple games that will be out soon on InstantAction. Expect to hear all about that later.
